Jouf

Overview

Jouf lays in the northern part of the Kingdom. It is bounded on the north by the Kingdom's northern boundary region on the north-west by the Qerayyat region; on the west by the Tabouk region; on the south by the Hail region.

Jouf is of particular interest because of the role it has played in pre- and post-Islamic history. There is archaeological evidence of the presence of the Assyrians and Nabateans in Jouf. Following its conquest by Muslims in the third year of the Hijra, it became a staging post for Muslim armies, setting out to spread the message of Islam, while remaining important cross-roads for traders and their caravans heading to or from Iraq and Syria into the Arabian Peninsula.

Major Attractions

The Standing stones of Al Rajajil II: According to some archeologist these standing stones at Sakaka were built 6000 years ago for religious purposes.

Za'abel II :This extremely photogenic mud-brick fortress occupying a cliff top is not so very old, perhaps 170 years, but may have been built atop much earlier, pre-Islamic (i.e., prior to the seventh century A.D.) foundations.

The Well of Bir Sirsar Bir Sisar: a huge, 2,000-year-old Nabatean well cut out of solid rock with staircases leading down into it.

Qasr Mared: A palace almost in the shape of ruins at Domat alJandel glorifies the tourists and archeologists.

There are a variety of Museums at different towns of Jouf. At Sakaka(a Town) there are 9 museums, two museums at Dumat al Jandel, and two at Al Qurayat.
